So the story begins, the prophecies of Nostradamus and the forebodings of the Mayan. The calendar stopped on December 21, 2012.

But now add to the equation the Planet Nibiru, or Planet X where millions fear the world will end in 2012. Nibiru, or Planet X. Many realize the world is swamped with ever greater problems—many proving to be insoluble. Really? It is true. Looking at the world in a logical and realistic view; the world is suffering, it’s called Global Warming, Climate Change. We’re in it it’s not a prophecy, but it is soluble if we act now and quickly. This however belongs to another post so I’ll refrain from getting deeper into it for now.
Reposting what I had written in 2009 concerning the Nostradamus frenzy, I’ll just reiterate what I had pointed out then, it applies to the Planet Nibiru as well as any other doom saying prophecies.
I’ll also interject that the only reason the Mayan Calendar stops in 2012 is because at some point the writer is going to stop and not continue for an eternity, stand to reason no? Our own calendar always shows the year before the present year and the year after but we don’t go around thinking that each year the bank gives us a new calendar oh my gosh the next year is going to end because the bank didn’t mark 1961 – 1962 – 1963 etc. applying the same logic to 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and so on. This would we waste of man power and ink and no one ever pays attention anyway, except of course dooms day prophesiers.

I always look forward to Friday Nights’ Horror Night Movies on Cable TV. No way in the world would I sit and watch it alone though, MrWabbit has to be nearby even if I have to nudge the volume up a few bars to drown out his snoring in the key of low G major, but he has to be near to save me from whatever it is he needs to save me from because as a rule my eyes are usually closed as soon as the music gives the clue something unfriendly and ugly is about to appear. As the music gets louder and faster your heartbeat is keeping rhythm whilst your fingernails dig deeper into the nearest thing to you, albeit sometimes human flesh that’s nearest to you. The music suddenly hits a pitch and your heart spikes as that of a dying star’s supernova. “What’s happening?” You scream; eyes still tightly shut. “The Grudge just double dipped your Salsa” a sleepy voice mumbles and promptly resumes snoring.
Our species, the bipedal humans have a need to get scared out of our wits now and then. It keeps us from becoming too complacent in this day and age where we are on top of the food chain and no longer need to stay alert, as we needed to when we first exited the forest, lest we become late afternoon lunch for some sabre-toothed tiger. We can easily spot those who have become too complacent today, those are the ones that go through stop signs while texting and driving, or finally stop their car on a train track instead of before it. But take their little Blueberry away and you’ll witness the end of the world first hand.
And so every culture has its own prophet and now and then a doomsday prediction comes to the spotlight to keep our heart and senses of alertness in good standing. Pretty much every decade there is an end of the world prediction if you look back. People have a tendency to sell some of their valuable possessions in that time. I never really could figure out the logic of that action, nevertheless selling things seem to be on the top of the list as doomsday approaches. Although according to my mom, her mother’s retelling of when Haley’s Comet flew by many, many years ago in 1910 people didn’t sell their possessions but had free sex in the streets believing the end of the world was here. But that’s another blog post in its entirety.
2012 is fast approaching and some are beginning to worry of what will happen. Books, movies, YouTube video clips are all putting many of the populace into a fear of frenzy, forecasting a doom and gloom, apocalyptic event. Nostradamus’ predictions comes heavily into the spot light, as well as the Mayan calendar as some foofaraw zealots (who have very limited knowledge of the night sky or the solar system in general) tell you that even scientists agree with what they have interpreted to mean or consist of.
Oh, well no! I really don’t mind the entertaining prophecies of any cultural foreseers but lets not drag science into it, especially to say that even scientists agree. Scientists have not agreed on their descriptions of what certain things are, mean and do in space and our Earth.
Lets take a look at Planetary Alignment
Nostradamus interpreters claim: Our sun will align with the centre of our galaxy in a Galactic alignment (the dark rift).
There is no Galactic alignment with the sun and the centre of our Galaxy in 2012 or any time. As simple as that. (According to Astronomers at NASA)
In the time of Nostradamus 500 years ago and as far back as of the Mayans thousand of years back, it was unknown that a galaxy even existed, or that we were in the outer reaches of an arm of our galaxy or that there was a centre of a galaxy (a galaxy they didn’t even know of.) It is ironic that it took Eric Beklin of UCLA 40 years to find the centre of our galaxy and was the first person to find it in the Constellation Sagittarius less than a decade ago, with the help of infrared lensing on the Keck telescope and Andrea Ghez of UCLA and her specialty in “Adaptive Optics” where we the populace had the fortunate occasion to see the very first print-outs of this great event. But the Mayan saw the black hole in the centre of our galaxy they didn’t know existed through all that dust and gas with their naked eye hmmmm. And not to forget Nostradamus in the lost and found book where he had drawings of the galaxy, with Sagittarius pointing his arrow to the centre of our galaxy. Amazing eh. What I would love to see is the carbon dating results of the parchment these little drawings were made on.
Lets take a look:
Nostradamus interpreter’s predictions: when all the planets align according to the Mayan and Nostredamus predictions bad things will happen.
First of all, it is impossible for all the planets to form a straight line out from the Sun (or viewed superimposed on each other in the sky) because each planetary orbit is tilted slightly with respect to the Earth's orbit (whose plane we trace out on the night sky as a line completely around the sky and is called the ecliptic).
To have all of the planets on the same side of the Sun and virtually all within the same quadrant (i.e., 90°) happens approximately once every 200 years -- rare as far as humans are concerned, but not rare as far as the solar system is concerned. But no where near on the day claimed, December 21 2012.
Nostradamus interpreters Claim: This is the birth canal. In the centre of our galaxy lies a black hole where all the stars are born. Where they even say that scientists agree with that.
The Geomagnetic Field;
They, the Nostradamus interpreters claim on December 21 2012 our magnetic pole will flip that day which will cause flood of two-mile high water. All technological equipments will fail. Your computers, your cell phones, satellites will fail. It will be chaos in an extreme way.
Our Earth’s Core and the Geomagnetic field;
Magnetic Pole shift: The above pictures show the Earth during a magnetic pole shift (which is currently happening). As you can see the Earth's magnetic field is not dormant during this pole shift, it just becomes more complicated. So as this pole shift occurs the Earth's South pole could travel up to Asia, or to Africa, until the poles have completely swapped spots. During this pole shift we are still protected against solar storms and space radiation. A Magnetic pole shift is a slow process; it takes hundreds even thousands of years. The biggest consequence of this pole shift will be changing our compasses in a few hundred years.
You may recall CME (coronal mass ejection) these are strong solar bursts or solar winds heading towards Earth, that have and more likely than not will again effect the electric grids as I’ve written about in a post (The Sun). As the magnetic field weakens during the times of its reversal we may experience again the power grids getting affected through the solar mass ejections, as well as other technological equipments such as satellites as it has in the past. This, is more likely to occur on the northern hemisphere of our planet and give us pretty and amazing auroras. We’ve already experienced this and life went on.
But there will be no sudden polar flip and true north will remain true north. The only thing that will have a gradual change over the next thousand years are the magnetite found in lava, the magnetic north and the magnetic field.
The Mayan council were more likely than not prophesying about their own catastrophe of impending drought through deforestation and crop failure by not allowing their crop fields to rest every some designated years.
Yes, the Maya "long count" calendar will reset in 2012, but other than this, it promises to be a normal day--at least, no different from those preceding it or following it, unless of course you didn’t cover your salsa and the Grudge will double dip.

For 1200 years, the Maya dominated Central America. At their peak around 900 A.D., Maya cities teemed with more than 2,000 people per square mile -- comparable to modern Los Angeles County. Even in rural areas the Maya numbered 200 to 400 people per square mile. But suddenly, all was quiet. And the profound silence testified to one of the greatest demographic disasters in human prehistory -- the demise of the once vibrant Maya society.
What happened?
Some NASA-funded researchers think they have a pretty good idea."They did it to themselves," says veteran archeologist Tom Sever. "The Maya are often depicted as people who lived in complete harmony with their environment,' says PhD student Robert Griffin. "But like many other cultures before and after them, they ended up deforesting and destroying their landscape in efforts to eke out a living in hard times."A major drought occurred about the time the Maya began to disappear. And at the time of their collapse, the Maya had cut down most of the trees across large swaths of the land to clear fields for growing corn to feed their burgeoning population. They also cut trees for firewood and for making building materials.
"They had to burn 20 trees to heat the limestone for making just 1 square meter of the lime plaster they used to build their tremendous temples, reservoirs, and monuments," explains Sever.
He and his team used computer simulations to reconstruct how the deforestation could have played a role in worsening the drought. They isolated the effects of deforestation using a pair of proven computer climate models: the PSU/NCAR mesoscale atmospheric circulation model, known as MM5, and the Community Climate System Model, or CCSM.
"We modeled the worst and best case scenarios: 100 percent deforestation in the Maya area and no deforestation," says Sever. "The results were eye opening. Loss of all the trees caused a 3-5 degree rise in temperature and a 20-30 percent decrease in rainfall.
"The results are telling, but more research is needed to completely explain the mechanisms of Mayan decline. Archeological records reveal that while some Maya city-states did fall during drought periods, some survived and even thrived.
"We believe that drought was realized differently in different areas," explains Griffin. "We propose that increases in temperature and decreases in rainfall brought on by localized deforestation caused serious enough problems to push some but not all city-states over the edge.
"The Maya deforested through the use of slash-and-burn agriculture – a method still used in their old stomping grounds today, so the researchers understand how it works.
"We know that for every 1 to 3 years you farm a piece of land, you need to let it lay fallow for 15 years to recover. In that time, trees and vegetation can grow back there while you slash and burn another area to plant in.
Not only did drought make it difficult to grow enough food, it also would have been harder for the Maya to store enough water to survive the dry season. "The cities tried to keep an 18-month supply of water in their reservoirs," says Sever. "For example, in Tikal there was a system of reservoirs that held millions of gallons of water. Without sufficient rain, the reservoirs ran dry." Thirst and famine don't do much for keeping a populace happy. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. "In some of the Maya city-states, mass graves have been found containing groups of skeletons with jade inlays in their teeth – something they reserved for Maya elites – perhaps in this case murdered aristocracy," he speculates. No single factor brings a civilization to its knees, but the deforestation that helped bring on drought could easily have exacerbated other problems such as civil unrest, war, starvation and disease.
