The Maglev System





Would MAGLEV for Shuttles alleviate all of the " external fuel tank Problems?"

It was many years ago that I had written about the maglev concept and today’s having come up again that maglev system would be a wiser way to get into space now that both Discovery and Endeavor are heading for the retirement home, I thought to turn back time and allow the Maglev System’s concept resurface.

From the time of the Space Shuttle Columbia’s re-entry tragedy, NASA had cancelled all shuttle missions for the next two years. Transportations back and forth to the International Space Station was employed by the Soyuz TMA from Russia.

Now that the shuttle is on a temporary hold from launch eagle averro of BPE came up with a unique approach of how to launch the shuttle in a safer mode at lift off. He provided a diagram along with some detailed information to show how the shuttle can be accelerated to over 1,000 mph on a MAGLEV track then when catapulted and the rockets ignite it can achieve safe escape velocity.

Finally in 2005 NASA regained its confidence once more to send their own shuttle Discovery, Return to Flight mission into space. On April 6th 2005 Space Shuttle Discovery rolled put to its launch pad at NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida but the launch came to a stop for safety reasons. A new window for the lift off was announced but this time NASA wanted the time allotted for further ensuring the safety of the space shuttle.

Says eagle averro; “ The shuttles have been a ‘Thorn’ because of the external fuel tank. The MAGLEV track does away with the need of the huge external fuel tanks, because the shuttle will use electricity to get to the first step of its needed accelerations for a cost of about 200$ electricity and not 500.000$ rocket fuel, MAGLEV is the use of natural and electromagnets to reduce friction. Eliminating the ‘O ring’ seal of the external fuel tank which can go faulty and cause the whole shuttle to go up in flames.”



Since there are no mountains not even as much as a hill in Florida, as mentioned by byoch of BPE, then NASA would need to build a ramp for lift off including a run way of approximately two miles as eagle estimated would be adequate for speeds to reach up to 6,300 mph or more as needed since Boeing has tested the MAGLEV at a higher speed than 6,300 mph. MAGLEV trains are now running in Japan and China, even though the USA had the first MAGLEV test labs.


Maybe it’s time to go back to the drawing board and take another look at the MAGLEV system.

The train has reached 500 kilometres per hour (312 miles per hour) in testing and will carry passengers at a top speed above 400 km/h (250 mph) .

All practical maglev systems have powerful magnets mounted on the moving maglev vehicle. The magnets interact with a normal temperature guideway, generating magnetic forces that stably levitate the moving vehicle.
