What were you thinking?

Opportunity has imaged two tiny craters on Mars, which is very nice for NASA to have informed us of that. See the details of the craters as said by NASA after this article. However according to the date of today’s image it would still place Opportunity at the same distress area where she is severely stuck in the deep sand and we are questioning now how will NASA plan to get the rover out or is this as far as Opportunity will have come in her third overtime journey? (see the various images of Opportunity in distress courtesy eagle averro)

Says eagle averro; “Here it is. One can see the numerous of efforts made to get Opportunity mobile again. Notice the amount of soil on top of both wheels. That is an indicator of the depth of the ‘Grave’. (front wheel)

It is true as Steve Squyres had said in a previous interview that the rovers are being driven and driven hard and speed was also being pressed of how far in a given day the rovers would drive. It had been speculated from the very beginning of both the rovers’ journey on Mars that their journey would come to an end if an unrepairable technical problem would come up. No one would ever have speculated on reckless driving to be the demise of the rover. Having already seen the sand getting softer as well as deeper should have been the first signal to test the waters before jumping in. In this case of course testing the sand in front before continuing the push onward. The 300mm approx almost one foot, continued drive forward into the depth of the sand after having already seen the sand is much too deep, the next question would be directed towards NASA’s engineer, who gave Opportunity the go ahead to continue deeper into the sand, What were you thinking?

Says eagle averro; “Note the Drive Motor is almost, if not touching the sand, that means that with more churning and no movement the Motor casing will act like a Jack support given the wheel no traction. At this point one can only look and wonder if the good times since the roving days of opportunity have come to a close. (rear wheel) image credit NASA/JPL/Exploratorium Edu/

The only hope I would imagine that could bring Opportunity out of her dilemma is to rock and keep rocking back to where she had come from. A long and tedious task but nevertheless it could be successful depending on the patience of the NASA engineer who is driving the rover. As eagle averro quoted so well in BPE ‘Haste makes Waste’, and this had been proven hasn’t it?The question would be what will NASA do about this now? Leave Opportunity to watch the sunset there and take now and then images of little craters here and there? Is this where it all ends for a fine Lady Rover who had met the challenges of pioneering the soils and craters of Mars with the minimum amount of tools and yet she conquered the most severe tasks demanded of her.
